This extension is an example of home renovation, a sustainable approach, as it updates an existing building. This means that new areas should not be affected, but rather the revitalization of neighborhoods already equipped with infrastructure and located close to services.

As the children grew up, the family needed new spaces, so a new module was designed for the master bedroom, bathroom, and living room, plus an office on the second floor.

It is a two-story hybrid structure made of concrete and a lightweight steel structure, incorporating wood as a natural material for the floors and window frames. The glass facade allows for views while optimizing natural lighting, improving the home’s energy efficiency.

Simple finishes were chosen to integrate with the existing home: wood, carpet, national concrete mosaics in traditional colors and patterns, and stone and glass blocks in the bathroom. The owner, a cabinetmaker by trade, built a wooden staircase himself.

Over the years, this house has been happily used by the Melendez Moran family, enjoying the connection between this bright, clean, and diverse structure, connected to their old home.

Home renovation is interesting: they preserve the spirit and history of the building, its character, and memories, while incorporating new ways of living, linked to changing lifestyle requirements and aesthetics of materials and finishes. The art of its design lies in combining both realities into a harmonious whole, where the stages are identified, but there is a good formal dialogue, a sign of the requirements and construction techniques of each era; the new one: incorporating open and continuous, luminous spaces and low-footprint construction systems, hybridizing materials such as concrete, steel, and wood.
