-Art and Craft

In Luz de Piedra, we are a sustainable architecture studio in Costa Rica created in San José in 2000 by Luz Letelier and Pietro Stagno. United by our passion for nature, the desire to take care of it and our practical approach, we founded our studio to create projects that not only resonate with natural beauty, but also respect and take advantage of the resources of the environment. In each project, we seek to integrate the landscape and create architectural solutions that respect the socioeconomic reality of the community, with a design adapted to the specificities of the tropics and focused on the sustainability and regeneration of the landscape.

We are direct, honest and empathetic people, who like to commit ourselves and establish long-term relationships. This attitude has allowed some of our clients to become good friends, and achieve projects that have been published and awarded for the use of Wood Architecture in Costa Rica, bamboo, integration with the landscape, achievements towards climate change and, a design adapted to the tropics and the socioeconomic reality of the community.

We feel passion for our profession, we love a practical approach and we enjoy the design and construction processes. We like to share being generous with our knowledge especially with the younger generations, giving classes and talks at universities and being always available for a good conversation about how well-conceived Wood Architecture in Costa Rica improves our quality of life.

Architectural Services

Master Plans:

For projects of a larger scale, and a certain complexity, we develop master plans, integrating land uses, mobility, water cycles (water supply, wastewater treatment, rainwater), energy supply, incorporation of renewable energy generation, biodiversity landscaping.

Architectural Design:

Design of buildings of different types, we have specialized in residential buildings, boutique hotels and eco lodges in natural areas, and we have experience with bamboo architecture Costa Rica for education, commercial and corporate.

Landscaping:

In every project, we complement the architectural design with plant elements such as gardens, planters, screens, including species appropriate to the place and that promote biodiversity.

CONCEPTS

We mainly seek to reduce the impact of the construction of our designs both during the construction phase and during the operational phase. To achieve this we have the following concepts rooted in our craft:

  1. Reduction of the way in which the structure sits on the existing terrain conditions so as not to alter much the existing biological systems and flows.
  2. Lightweight structural systems (Bamboo Architecture Costa Rica, wood, steel) that adapt to the topography, are fresher and integrate into the natural landscape.
  3. Semi-prefabricated systems, which reduce waste and construction time; therefore, the impact on the site.
  4. Comfort with passive methods: heat and humidity reduction design strategies that allow you to expand the comfort range without mechanized systems.
  5. Design of water cycles: separation, reduction and harvest
  6. Energy optimization: indirect lighting, cross ventilation, incorporation of renewable energy generation.
  1. “The generous umbrella”: large roofs that generate shade and protect from the rain.
  2. Intermediate spaces (terraces, corridors, galleries, balconies) open to the outside where the tropical lifestyle is promoted.
  3. “The good boots”: structural supports that allow you to raise floors to give way to water and biodiversity and thus reduce absorption, humidity.
  4. Honest materials, visible tectonics, simple finishes, accents of texture and color.
  1. Respect for the existing flora and fauna, promote biological corridors.
  2. Generous inclusion of biodiversity and biotic mass in projects (gardens, and green screens).
  3. Design and use of rainwater (channeling, permeability, retention, secondary uses).
