A Hidden Gem Nestled up in the Hills

“Off-grid and off-the-beaten-track.” That’s what the Cielo Lodge says about itself. It also calls itself a “modern, minimalist eco-lodge,” and that sounds about right.

We’d add a few things ourselves to a description of the Cielo Lodge. First, we’d say it’s slightly more than minimalist and modern; we’d call it, in fact, the last word in boutique, understated, eco-luxury. And we’re not the only ones to praise Cielo Lodge, either. Since it opened in the hills above the port of Golfito in Costa Rica’s Southern Zone, Harper’s Bazaar named it in its “20 Best Places to Travel in 2021” list. Forbes said it was one of its “Ten Cool New Hotels to Visit in 2021”. Conde Nast Traveler put Cielo Lodge on its 2021 hot list of the best new hotels globally, while Travel and Leisure also put it on their “Editors’ Picks” list of best unique hotels in the world for 2021.

In short, Cielo Lodge is famous and making waves with travel experts.

Inside Perrey Reeves’ Costa Rica Yoga Retreat

PERREY REEVES IS THE CO-CREATOR of every yogi’s paradise, The Sanctuary at Two Rivers in Costa Rica. Best known for playing one half of our favorite television couples of all time as Mrs. Ari on HBO’s hit show, Entourage, Perrey is also a life-long veggie, animal advocate and yogi extraordinaire. Together with Liz Lindh, the young Chinese medicine practitioner and natural health expert, Perrey has created a world-class yoga destination on every retreat-goer’s short list. The Sanctuary at Two Rivers is green through and through – 100% solar-powered! – and offers an exhilarating, healing, off-the-grid experience for anyone craving a little jungle-steeped yoga immersion.

We asked Liz and Perrey to tell us what inspired them to create this yogic paradise and we’re living vicariously through the images and insights they’ve shared with us – and dreaming of a little tropical getaway in the near future!

THE CHALKBOARD MAG: What inspired the building of the Sanctuary retreat?

LIZ LINDH: The inspiration behind The Sanctuary at Two Rivers comes from the fact that in today’s technologically-driven modern world of suburban and urban living people are moving faster, consuming more, and want it all now. There is a deep need to slow down and reconnect to oneself and to nature. We want to provide a place where people can come to affect real change in their lives, to invest in their own health and wellness, to experience a week-long immersion and strengthen their bodies, clear their minds and brighten their spirits.

The Sanctuary at Two Rivers, Costa Rica

Ever wanted to stay in a treehouse? Be one with nature? The Sanctuary was designed and built specifically for guests to reconnect with Mother Nature through adventurous outdoor activities and accommodations that are modern and luxe, yet built au naturel overlooking the jungle. Nearby you’ll find cascading waterfalls, monkeys, butterflies and Costa Rica’s first National Park, Cabo Blanco.

The Sanctuary is guaranteed to recharge the body, mind and spirit with carefully designed yoga and meditation programs, and a healthy, eco-conscious menu of organic food. And although the retreat is 100 percent off the grid, it’s not far from world-renowned surf spots, mountain biking trails, zip lining and other adventurous activities. Balance that with spa treatments, and you’ll find The Sanctuary at Two Rivers is the perfect way to immerse yourself in nature without leaving your modern comforts behind. And yes, you can really stay in a treehouse.

Jungle Gym

In the Costa Rican jungle near the village of Cabuya — past a bridge, through a series of wooden gates and up an unmarked trail — sits a new yoga retreat, the Sanctuary at Two Rivers.Founded by the actress Perrey Reeves, who played the very yoga-fit Mrs. Ari Gold on HBO’s “Entourage,” and Jeff Gossett, a restaurateur, the solar-powered resort was built completely by hand: no bulldozers, only shovels.”When you cook with a lot of love, you taste it; when you build with a lot of love, you can feel it,” Gossett says of their decade-long project. (And when you plant with a lot of love, evidently, you can smell it: the orchids blooming right outside the showers are no accident, he adds.) Visitors can either sign up for one of the Sanctuary’s regularly scheduled packages, like the weeklong Full-Moon Retreat, or rent out the entire 40-acre property for a private yogi gathering. The “accessible, eco-conscious and peaceful” country of Costa Rica, Reeves says, was the only place where the pair considered breaking ground. “Plus, there are monkeys!”

What’s cool?
Brand new, private 40-acre eco-estate with over 300 fruit trees exclusive for only 12 guests. What’s unique?
Costa Rica’s premier 100% Off-The-Grid, Solar Powered Retreat Center where you will live and learn the lessons of one of the Earth’s only five “Blue Zones; places in the world where higher percentages of people enjoy remarkably long, full lives” according to author Dan Buttiner. Everything was constructed with meticulous care around the landscape as opposed to the usual practice of landscaping afterward around the structures. It feels like you are living in a Zen tree-house with Japanese architectural flair, accented with natural fabrics, stone tiles, tropical woods and art, the majority of which were from quarries in Costa Rica and India.
